WHAT IS DRY SCALP?
“Dry scalp” is best described as a feeling of dryness and tightness on the scalp. It is commonly associated with visible skin flaking and can also result in itching. Read on to find out more about dry scalp and how to treat it…
DRY SCALP VS. DANDRUFF
Much like dandruff, dry scalp affects many people and can lead to discomfort and a lack of confidence. When the scalp loses too much of its natural moisture it becomes dry and tight. This can occur due to factors like cold weather, a buildup of hair products, or even dehydration.
Dandruff on the other hand, has many causes and is usually associated with the presence of Malassezia - a yeast-like fungus that grows on oily areas of the scalp. When the scalp’s natural protection becomes weak and unhealthy, irritants produced by Malassezia are able to feed on the excess oil, causing skin cells to shed faster than usual. Dandruff flakes are larger than dry skin flakes and don’t fall off the scalp as easily.
A dry scalp is not always the cause of dandruff. CLEAR has found that moisture is important for scalp health. Low moisture in the scalp will result in a compromised scalp barrier, which further leads to more susceptibility to dandruff.
HOW TO TREAT DRY SCALP
1. Stay Hydrated
One of the best dry scalp treatments also happens to be one of the simplest: stay hydrated and make sure you’re drinking enough water. Staying well hydrated is key to maintaining healthy skin, especially during particularly hot or cold weather. Extreme weather conditions can make your scalp dehydrated and cause dry skin, but regularly drinking water can help your body replenish any lost moisture.
2. Avoid Over-styling Your Hair
Dry scalp is often triggered by a build-up of hair products on the scalp; it can also result from overuse of hair dryers, curling tongs and straighteners that can cause heat damage and dry out the scalp. For a healthy, hydrated scalp, it’s best to keep hair styling to a minimum and avoid using styling tools more than once or twice a week.
3. Change your shampoo
Whilst it’s true that overuse of hair products can cause dry scalp, moderate use of a good shampoo is still important. Switching to a shampoo that cleans hair without compromising the scalp’s natural moisture will help eliminate dry scalp symptoms over time. Try using specially formulated shampoos like CLEAR Anti-Dandruff Complete Soft Care Shampoo formulated with Nutrium 10, which nourishes and restores the scalp’s natural moisture.
A dry itchy scalp can be a pain, but treating its symptoms is a simple matter of staying hydrated, taking a gentle approach to hair care and using a shampoo that keeps your scalp clean, healthy and nourished.
